JUNE 1984 - #1 ****************************** ARTICLE ********************************* Some Doubtful Ancestors of Capt. Peter Loop of Hillsdale, NY by Victor L. Bennison, 2 Georgetown Drive, Amherst, NH 03031 I have seen it written in many places that Capt. Peter Loop was the son of Christian Loop who was the son of Gerlach Loop, all of whom supposedly came over from Germany via Rotterdam about 1751. I have come to the conclusion that this is probably not true. I have found no primary source information that supports this claim. The claim seems to have originated with Munsell's American Ancestry, a work that purports to show the ancestry of many Americans contemporary to the time it was written. I do not know how this book is generally regarded in terms of accuracy, but I believe it is wrong in this case. Munsell's says: ...Peter Lupp of Hillsdale... Son of Christian of Germany and New York, b. in Germany, d. probably at Hillsdale, N.Y. physician, came to this country 1751 with his son Peter, above, two brothers, John and Peter... settled on the bank of the Hudson; Son of Gerloch of near Coblenz, Germany, b. there, came to this country 1751, silk manufacturer... There is no doubt that there was a Gerlach Loop or Lupp who arrived in Philadelphia in 1751 accompanied by John, Peter, and Christian. Peter probably came earlier in 1749 or later in 1754. These four men all moved to New Jersey and the three brothers all died there. I don't know where Gerlach died. The brothers' wills yield the following information: 12 MAY 1802 Peter Lupp, clockmaker of New Brunswick, New Jersey son (deceased)___ Henry Lupp daughter-in-law__ Mary Lupp grand-children_______ Samuel Lupp Frances Lupp Peter Lupp Sarah Lupp friend___________ William Lupp (his nephew?) APR 1805 John Lupp, of New Brunswick, New Jersey children__________Catherine Boureau William Lupp Sarah Lupp Mary Langstroth Frances Hopkins Lawrence Lupp Charles Lupp 3 JAN 1763 Christian Lupp, of Amwell Twp, Hunterdon Co., NJ, yeoman wife__________Maria children__________Jacob Lupp Christian Lupp Elizabeth Lupp Maria Lupp brothers______Peter Lupp John Lupp Text of will implies children are not of age. Note that Christian Lupp's will does not mention Capt. Peter Loop, nor an Eva Loop, nor a Martin Loop, which will become important below. There is evidence of a Christian Loop being in New York long before 1751. In 1737 we find Anna Maria Loep at Trinity Church in New York City at a baptism for a child (not hers) born at sea. Also present is Anna Elizabeth Kupfer. It is tempting to assume that Maria Loop had just arrived herself, but we don't know that. That this is the Maria Loop, wife of Christian Loop of upstate New York is fairly certain, for Christian and Maria Loop are found together with Elizabeth (Loop) Cooper and her husband Martin Cooper in several Reformed Church records. Maria is there listed as Anna Maria Vilger. I have found baptism records for Martin Loop (1741) and Eva Loop (1747) in Germantown the son and daughter of Christian and Maria Loop. If Christian somehow found his way back to New Jersey in time to die in 1763, why aren't either of these children or Capt. Peter Loop mentioned in his will? I think we are dealing with two Christian Loop's whose relationship, if any, is yet to be determined. The only link I can find between the two families, is that one branch of John Loop's family changed their name to Leupp about the same time one branch of Capt. Peter's family did so also. If anyone can provide any primary source information linking the New Jersey Lupp's with the New York Loop's please send it to me. Descendents of Ens. Hendrick Loop should find it interesting that in 1737 Christian and Maria Loop were not far downstream from Fishkill where Hendrick was born in 1740. I would not be the least bit surprised to discover that he is their son. But so far that is only speculation. My research so far seems to indicate that there are three major separate groups of Loops, probably only loosely connected, if at all. There are the Hudson Valley Loops, probably the earliest group; the New Jersey Loops, who came in the mid-1700's; and the southern Pennsylvania Loops, the descendents of Ludwig Loop, a Dutch Reform minister of Lancaster County, PA, who also came over in the mid-1700's. All of these groups, of course, spread out around the country. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ VITAL DATA +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Cemetery records from Hillsdale, Columbia County, New York: (Loops) Annie D., wife of David, 9/17/1853 ae 76 Charlotte E.
